My 5 month old english bulldog had her cherry...

My 5 month old english bulldog had her cherry eye surgically repaired on Monday, March 19. Yesterday and today, the inner lid around the lower part of the eye is very swollen, sometimes bright red, and the eyeball itself has a dark blue coloring over the pupil area. Is this part of the healing? What is going on?

Hello, and thanks for writing in.

The swelling and redness is common for several days after a cherry eye surgery. The dark blue coloring is a bit more concerning, as this it not typically seen after surgery. It could indicate edema in the cornea (front covering of the eyeball), a scratch or ulcer on the cornea, or inflammation. I would definitely try to get Stella Mae rechecked by your veterinarian today. If they are not available, you may need to get into another clinic. I'm not trying to be an alarmist, but we don't mess around with eye issues, and I would rather get her eye examined sooner than later, especially if additional medication is needed to help with healing. It's good that she is wearing an Elizabethan collar - keep it on her.

I hope this helps.
