Hi! My dogs are both sick to their stomachs- vomiting and diarrhea. I have some medication my vet gave me called metoclopramide 5mg. I’m wondering if it’s ok to administer this in addition to the apoquel and thyro-tabs she’s currently taking.
JA: I'll do all I can to help. Hopefully it didn't make a mess. Did your dog eat anything unusual?
Customer: Thank you! Not that I know of.
JA: OK. The Expert will know what to do. What is your dog's name and age?
Customer: PJ age 15
JA: What is the dog's name?
Customer: And Tucker age 13. He is not currently taking any meds
JA: Is there anything else the Veterinarian should be aware of about your dog?
Customer: PJ and Tucker are their names. PJ is the dog currently on the other medications.

I'm sorry that your pups are not feeling well. I am very concerned that they may have eaten something unusual, howerever There are multiple causes of their symptoms. Without a physical exam it is difficult to pinpoint the causes. I will list recommended testing, possible diagnosis and things to try. metocloprimide may be given with other medications however if vomiting oral medications should be limited.

Testing

bloodwork (CBC, Chem),

radiographs

Fecal

If able take a rectal or eat temperature (normal 99-103)

Diagnosis

Foreign bodies & toxins

Infections/ virus

Dietary indiscretion: eating people food or getting into the trash can cause severe gastroenteritis or pancreatitis

Organ dysfunction: early stages of liver and kidney failure can begin with decreased appetite. diabetes. thyroid disease

gastritis / pancreatitis

Treatments

With hold food for 4-6 hours then try bland diet

Begin bland diet (chicken/rice, tuna)

pepcid AC 0.5mg per pound

Thank you! I will try the metoclopramide for tonight and see how they are in the morning. Is Pepcid AC the only other stomach med that can be given? Would tums or Zantac be ok?

Ok, I found some. So if she weighs 26lbs, I would give her 13mg of Pepcid? And can I give both the Pepcid and the metoclopramide?
