Dr. BJ Hughes :
Hi there -
Dr. BJ Hughes :Welcome to Just Answer.
Dr. BJ Hughes :Is the cough the major feature that is causing problems? How frequent? any respiratory difficulty in breathing or wheezing?
Dr. BJ Hughes :Often antibiotics are not used in this infection -- and penicillin would not be a medication commonly chosen.
Dr. BJ Hughes :So there may be a better approach -- some even with over the counter meds --
Dr. BJ Hughes :It appears you are offline - if you are still lin need of assitance with this question, please write me back ...
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:I finally was able to log in. I am using penicillin. What dosage do I use for my dogs. They are infected.
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Hello......
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Hello.............
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:My Monsta is coughing, wheezing, gaging. He is getting worse. I have 4 dogs. What dosage do I give them?
Dr. BJ Hughes :Hi there -- with Kennel cough penicillin would not be the medication to use .
Dr. BJ Hughes :Are you sure this is kennel cough ?
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:The feed store did not have meds shown on website?
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Yes, My daughter bought a terrier at spca before christmas. Bella.... has cough. comes and goes. Has been aroung my dog Monsta, who is now coughing, wheezing. and now gaging. Getting worse.
Dr. BJ Hughes :Ok -- with kennel cough -- the medication of choice is doxycycline -- and it is prescription only -- and not something that would be found on the shelf --
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Are you able to give prescription?
Dr. BJ Hughes :However -- it also does not really treat the kennel cough infection -- as it is hard to treat with antibiotics. We give the antiboitics to decrease chance of secondary infection .
Dr. BJ Hughes :Prescriptions are not legal unless a physical exam is given --
Dr. BJ Hughes :However -- I can tell you what medications that are not prescription, that might be used --
Dr. BJ Hughes :with kennel cough .
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:OK
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Still there?
Dr. BJ Hughes :with kennel cough -- it usually runs its course in 10 - 14 days --
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:ok
Dr. BJ Hughes :It can be mild to severe (with coughing up blood, and secondary pneumonia)
Dr. BJ Hughes :Obviously - if it is severe -- then a vet visit and prescription meds are needed -
Dr. BJ Hughes :With over the counter meds --
Dr. BJ Hughes :YOu can use --
Dr. BJ Hughes :Dextromethorphan cough medication --
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:LIke musinex d
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Mucinex D
Dr. BJ Hughes :http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=0+1303+1469&aid=1395
Dr. BJ Hughes :Here is a link to additonal info -- Not like musinex as this has guafenisen in it as well --
Dr. BJ Hughes :But simple cough medication - with dextromethorphan as the active ingredient.
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Dosage is shown on this website... as I have 4 different dogs to medicate
Dr. BJ Hughes :Yes -- it does --
<span class="JA_chatAuthorName"Customer:Should I use it up to 10 to 14 days?
Dr. BJ Hughes :Simply multiply the pounds in body weight -- time the dosage -- this gives the total dosage in mg
Dr. BJ Hughes :Then when you find a medication -- check to see how many mg per teaspoon or other measurement - -
Dr. BJ Hughes :This is for the cough only -- to give some relief --
Dr. BJ Hughes :and is given only when needed --
Dr. BJ Hughes :If there is increased problems, difficulty breathing , loss of appetite , loss of energy -- then a vet visit is needed for prescription meds.
