Hi there Junipeer 1970,

Welcome to Just Answer! I would be happy to help you with this question, but need a bit more information in order to better assist you.

How old is your pup and what breed?

What colour is the discharge?

When did it start?

Hi again,

What you are describing is probably something called "puppy vaginitis." This is an inflammation of the vulva and surrounding tissue. It generally occurs in puppies under 1 year of age before they have their first heat. We don't know exactly what causes it, but it does usually go away and never return once they reach puberty.

Sometimes, a dog that is licking the vulva a lot has a "deep seated vulva." This means that the vulva is tucked down inside a fold of skin, making the dog prone to skin infections because it always stays moist in the fold. With these dogs, I usually suggest they have 1 heat before being spayed because that will cause the vulva to become enlarged and not tucked away so deeply. THIS IS RARE.

As for what you can do to help your pup feel more comfortable, I would suggest that you wash the area 3 times daily with an antibacterial soap. I recommend Hibitane soap (also called chlorhexidene soap). In Canada and the USA it is available in pharmacies in the skin care of first aid section. Ask the pharmacis.. Mix the soap 1 tablespoon per cup of warm water. Scrub the affected area, and hold a hot compress on there for 2 or 3 minutes if your dog let you. Do this 3 times daily for 3 days, then twice daily for the rest of the week. Rinse well with plain water. Pat dry especially in any folds.

I hope that this has been helpful! If it has, please hit the "Accept" button and leave feedback.

If you have more questions, just reply and I will try to help.

The above is given for information only. Although I am a licensed veterinarian, I cannot legally prescribe medicines or diagnose your pet's condition without performing a physical exam. If you have concerns about your pet I would strongly advise contacting your regular veterinarian.

Good luck with your puppy!
